We had stopped for lunch in Tinley Park, Illinois. If we had done a hotel, at least two of us would have had to share rooms. It was cheaper for the three of us to do that and this way we’d all get our own room. We did an AirBnB rental in a suburb of Des Moines called Ankeny. We left GR around 1:30 and with just a couple of stops, we made it to Des Moines just before 9:00 Central time. We drove the 7 1/2 hours to Des Moines (from Grand Rapids…I had to go there first) on Tuesday afternoon.

I was heading to Des Moines, IA for six nights with a couple of co-workers (my daughter likes it, and she normally will only eat the kraft kind.) - The dinner salad is good, but the lettuce is only iceberg.J went on her first work trip at her now job two weeks ago. The kids mac&cheese is a shell noodle with a white cheese sauce on it. I think the cavatelli dinner is great, and I'm not a big pasta fan. The cheese is just better and the pepperoni isn't as greasy or salty as the chain places. He buys a higher quality of food, which is one of the reasons I think my family likes it so much. The homemade onion rings are awesome - I've had a discussion with the owner about the pizza ingredients. Some notes on the food: - The pizza is all thin crust. It's a business and they're always trying to manage/guess demand vs. (Personally I don't mind such things as long as it's not a consistent problem. The wait staff is pretty good about keeping up, and you can see they're working and not just standing around. So keep that in mind if there's a rush of people showing up. There is typically only 1-2 servers, maybe 3 on friday or saturday. If it's your first time I'd recommend either not trying friday/saturday, or waiting until about 8pm. (You are just standing off to the side of someones table or outside.) This can be a problem in the winter if you're waiting outside or sitting at a table near the door. Friday and Saturday evenings you will have to wait, and there isn't really a waiting area. They do a lot of carry-out business, but we always eat in the restaurant. It has a small town, home-y atmosphere to it. I really enjoy eating at Leaning Tower! The restaurant isn't very big, I would guess seating for only 75-80 people.
